Clive Davis: The Soundtrack Of Our Lives

    October 6, 2017

    Documentary / 2017 / 123 minutes

A corrective for the typically sordid showbiz doc, Chris Perkel’s Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives presents its subject – legendary genre-spanning record executive Clive Davis – in an almost glowing light. It helps that countless celebrated musical artists speak so highly of Davis; Aretha Franklin, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys and Patti Smith are all on hand to attest to the character of “the man with the golden ear” who’s talent for shepherding pop careers resulted in nearly five decades of chart-topping hits. It’s a fascinating trip through musical history – memorable recollections include an epiphany seeing Janis Joplin at Monterey Pop and convincing Barry Manilow that the key to his success lay in him performing other people’s songs – but the most emotionally resonant tale concerns Davis’ longstanding fatherly relationship with mega-star Whitney Huston, the tragic figure he struggled so valiantly to save. With Paul Simon, Bob Weir, Babyface and Carlos Santana among many others.

    Repo Man

    October 6, 2017

    Comedy / 1984 / 92 minutes

One of the defining punk rock films of the 80s, Alex Cox’s Repo Man is a definitive cult classic and arguably the career high point of burgeoning star and heartthrob Emilio Estevez. It helps that Estevez’s rookie car re-possessor Otto is paired with one of the great character actors of our time – the recently passed Harry Dean Stanton, bringing his world-weary hangdog deadpan to the role of repo-mentor, a part Stanton wears with slack-suited ease. The narrative is as loose and meandering as its protagonists, an anarchistic ride through the seedier streets of Los Angeles, part comedy, part mystery and all gonzo. In the capable but unpredictable hands of Cox – one of cinema’s great outsiders – Repo Man goes to places literally out-of-this world while thumbing its nose at the status quo, making it the sort of perfect midnight movie, late night cable pot smoking experience. Also starring character actor/weirdo extraordinaire Tracey Walter in one of his most memorably oddball roles.
