We Are New York Series, Grit & Gore: Maniac 35mm Q&A with William LustigNovember 15, 2017
Horror / 1980 / 87 minutes
In MANIAC (1980) Bill Lustig’s blood-soaked gritty slasher, a harsh and unforgiving portrait of a gritty New York City in the 80s serves as a backdrop for the character study of Frank Zito, a shlubby schizophrenic middle aged psychopathic loner (played by Joe Spinell) who stalks the streets at night slaughtering and scalping woman whose skin he adorns his collection of female mannequins with. Frank Zito is a deeply disturbed man, haunted by the traumas of unspeakable childhood abuse who is also very much the result of his own environment. An apathetic, cutthroat City of alienation and sleaze that symbolizes Frank’s own isolation and desperation haunts his world like a filthy nightmare where the only escape is ultra violence and madness.
