ContemptSeptember 11, 2021
Drama / 1963 / 102 minutes
The critical accolades levied on Jean-Luc Goddard’s meta masterwork Contempt were effusive upon its release in 1963, and its esteem has only grown in the fifty-odd years since, cementing it as a crucial film in the lauded French-Italian New Wave. Filmed at Rome’s famed Cinicitta studios, the film-within-a-film follows the exploits of a French playwright (Michel Picoli) and his wife (the incomparable Brigitte Bardot, at her bombshell best) who are tasked by a vulgar American producer (Jack Palance) to rework a big screen adaptation of The Odyssey for German auteur and Goddard hero Fritz Lang (playing himself). Capturing cinema culture of the era in a way no other director of the time could possibly match, Goddard’s gorgeously melancholic skewering of the Hollywood machine also functions as a referential, reverential love letter, a tragicomic ode to the art of filmmaking that it is as uncompromising as it is romantic. With Giorgia Moll and Raoul Coutard.
