    Film Fun Presents: Gigli (35mm)

    November 13, 2021

    Comedy / 2003 / 121 minutes

"Larry Gigli (Affleck) is assigned to kidnap the brother of a prominent district attorney and a beautiful woman known only as Ricki (Lopez) is sent to stay with him to make sure he doesn’t screw up the job, setting in motion an unexpected (and frankly revelatory) series of hangout scenes in which Lopez and Affleck spar over sex and gender roles.

Following the film’s notoriously fraught release in the summer of 2003, one critic mused of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s then-nascent romance, “How any relationship could be expected to survive after Gigli is a mystery.” Accordingly, the couple broke up soon after.

But Bennifer is back, and so is Gigli, a mature and bracingly progressive comedy of sexual manners that takes place in a version of Los Angeles directly adjacent to its contemporaries Kill Bill and Punch-Drunk Love. It’s refreshingly weird, genre-defying, and the kind of big-budget studio drama that scarcely exists in the post-streaming world -- perhaps no film since Ishtar has been in such dire need of reappraisal. Come shoot your shot."
